Complete Romaine Portfolio to fill Slotting Schedule

Romaine Field

In places like Salinas Valley, romaine lettuce is grown year-round. But that doesn’t mean the weather conditions are consistent.

Because of this, the same romaine variety cannot be grown year-round, so growers have to find different varieties that work for different times of year — something known as slotting.

With Syngenta Vegetable Seeds, growers don’t have to guess and trial new varieties for slotting; we have a robust portfolio that fits any slotting need.

“If you’re a conventional Romaine grower, you could use all Syngenta products to build a whole planting schedule, no matter where you were growing, or when you were growing,” said Justin Goodwyn, Syngenta Vegetable Seeds Product Specialist, Brassicas and Leafies. “Syngenta is really a one-stop shop when it comes to romaine.”

Romaine Yield and Quality

Two of Syngenta’s most popular — and top-performing  — romaine varieties are Duquesne and Cardinal.

“Duquesne is likely the best performing romaine variety to ever exist,” Goodwyn said. “And that’s because it’s a hardy romaine that growers can plant and forget most times of the year. It performs really well without being too sensitive.”

Cardinal, a newer variety, is also highly adaptable. Its ability to grow well in most conditions adds assurance and flexibility.

“We have incredibly strong, well-producing varieties of conventional romaine with the best genetics in the industry,” Goodwyn said.

In other romaine advancements, SolidRib offers exceptional weight as well as durability for shipping and storage. Syngenta currently offers 3 commercial SolidRib varieties with others in pre-commercial trialing.

Protecting Yield with Disease Resistance

A recent and emerging threat is the Impatiens Necrotic Spot Virus (INSV). Syngenta was the first to offer an INSV-resistant variety, Stampede, and our new INSV-resistant romaine varieties offer protection against this new disease as well as downy mildew, tomato bushy stunt virus and Fusarium wilt race 1.

Discover this and other disease resistance in Salinas, Calif. — and how we can help build a slotting schedule for you. Our growers and breeders will be at the Future of Veg event in Salinas August 12-13 and would love to share more about what we are working on.
