Syngenta was the first to announce ToBRFV resistance in late 2020, and the first commercial varieties were planted in early 2021. Since then, we’ve continued to work tirelessly to provide solutions for tomato growers.
In 2024 the first detection of ToBRFV in Australia was identified and communicated across the industry.
"Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus has a significant impact on growers. In fact, growers can lose up to 70% of their produce due to the virus, and it's spreading rapidly." Dion Potter, JAK Territory Brand and Customer Head
In 2025, Syngenta Australia will be introducing intermediate ToBRFV resistant varieties that have been trialed and tested in Europe and are now commercial with many more resistant varieties in the pipeline.
Syngenta's Seed Production & Quality Testing
Syngenta's ToBRFV Testing for Australia:
- All tomato seeds imported to Australia are tested at least twice
- First test meets Syngenta's internal quality standards
- Performed by a Naktuinbouw Authorized laboratory
- Second test conducted by a third-party laboratory
- Uses primers and protocols approved by Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry
- Only seeds testing negative in both tests are supplied to Australia
