Sydney- Australia, 17th July 2025 – Since 2015, Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus (ToBRFV) has negatively impacted tomato production, with the virus now in at least 35 countries, with more instances occurring every year.
In 2024 the first detection of ToBRFV in Australia was identified and communicated across the industry. On 29 May 2025, the National Management Group decided that it is no longer technically feasible to eradicate ToBRFV from Australia.
Today Syngenta Vegetable Seeds Australia is excited to present a ToBRFV Resource Centre to provide growers with one more tool in the fight for healthy tomatoes. In 2020, with first commercial plantings in 2021, Syngenta was the first company to bring ToBRFV resistant tomatoes to the market. This new Resource Centre aims to provide easy to understand information and solutions to Tomato growers in Australia.
“Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus has a significant impact on growers,” said Dion Potter, JAK Head of Marketing. In fact, growers can lose up to 75% of their produce due to the virus, and it’s spreading rapidly. Therefore, broad resistance will be built into our portfolio during the next several years.”
Discover Resources to Use in Daily Operations
ToBRFV easily transmits on clothing, accessories, equipment, and tools. Therefore it is vitally important to follow stringent hygiene measures to minimise the risk of spreading the virus from greenhouse to greenhouse or field to field.
The Resource Centre provides helpful tools to reduce transmission risk, as well as a downloadable checklist and infographics. The latter have been designed to be downloaded and printed, and can be posted in greenhouse spaces to remind employees and visitors of best hygiene practices to keep your tomato crops safe.
You will also be able to find information and stay up to date with all our latest varieties being trialed and sold here in Australia with ToBRFV resistance.
